...there's still a slim chance that Carnahan might win a posthumous victory. Under Missouri law, Carnahan's name will remain on the ballot despite his death. If he were somehow to defeat Ashcroft - the race had been very close - a series of odd but formidable events would unfold. On Jan. 3, Ashcroft's Senate term would expire. Missouri law requires the seat to be declared "vacant," since the victor in the election would be dead. The state's interim Governor, Roger Wilson, who took office last week upon Carnahan's death, would appoint an interim Senator, who would stand...
...list of musical annoyances, people have been putting up songs on the Internet claiming to be tracks from advance copies of upcoming albums. On Napster now, you can find songs claiming to be from the upcoming U2 album All That You Can't Leave Behind or from Fatboy Slim's Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, but a quick listen shows them to be nothing but songs by random groups trying to get more people to listen to their own work. Pretty and slim, she is so shy, so inexpert in marketing herself, that people don't notice her--or, if they do see her, think of Olive Oyl. Ray, though, has a more discerning eye than most. A rich businessman on a field trip for erotic adventure, he stops at her counter to buy a pair of gloves, and--a nice touch--sends them to her. Thus begins a courtship defined by emotional compromise, misunderstood signals and the sort of betrayals that...
...With just three weeks remaining until Election Day, Bush holds a slim but psychologically significant lead in national polls, and Gore's entourage is scrambling to make up the difference. They're hoping their chance may materialize during Tuesday night's debate at Washington University in St. Louis, when a town hall?style exchange will allow audience members to query the candidates directly - a format the vice president's camp hopes will favor their nominee's superior grasp of the issues...
