...resignation of the 44-member Cabinet was not so significant as it was dramatic, since the Cabinet had been a rubber stamp. Its dismissal, however, did serve to rid Krenz of Premier Willi Stoph, a Honecker loyalist. The dissolution of the 21-member Politburo, and its replacement with a slimmer ten-member body, was far more pointed, since that is where the real power lies. Some of its more notorious hard-liners got the ax, including Stoph; Erich Mielke, head of the despised state security apparatus; and Kurt Hager, chief party ideologist. Hans Modrow, 61, the Dresden party leader...

...allowable under Roe. The court has permitted states and the Federal Government to forbid the use of Medicaid funds to pay for abortions that are not necessary to preserve the mother's health. Most other state laws that restrict abortion have been rebuffed by the Justices, but by ever slimmer margins. In 1986, the last time the court took up an abortion case, only a 5- to-4 majority could be mustered to strike down a Pennsylvania "informed consent" law that required women seeking abortion to be presented first with arguments against it. The fifth vote was provided by Lewis...

...ominous note marred the outcome of the plebiscite for Aquino. Voters among the 250,000-member armed forces, who cast their ballots on military bases, approved the constitution by about only 60%, a far slimmer margin than was voted by the population at large. More than 50% of air force voters turned thumbs down on the document. Aquino, for her part, sought to downplay the military's lack of enthusiasm, contending that a 60% show of support still amounted to a landslide. Perhaps. But disaffected military officers have been implicated in both of the coup attempts staged against Aquino...

...rule, anything that is titled Collected Stories suggests a summing up or a retrospective, a big book that gathers the contents of earlier, slimmer ones. Such volumes tend to be tributes to writers and testaments to their careers rather than displays of new works or directions. And that would certainly appear to be the case with Wright Morris' Collected Stories, 1948-1986. Morris is, after all, one of the most distinguished and honored living American men of letters, author of 19 novels (including Love Among the Cannibals and The World in the Attic), five books of his own photographs...
