...Meant to bring everyday Europeans closer to the E.U. institutions that govern them in distant Brussels, the direct democracy experiment allows citizens to sling their concerns onto the E.U. agenda. The principle is simple: if campaigners muster 1 million signatures for a proposal, they can ask the European Commission, the E.U.'s executive branch, to write new legislation. "This is all about taking the E.U. outside of the Brussels beltway and giving it full democratic expression," said Maros Sefcovic, the E.U. commissioner in charge of putting the proposal into place. "The E.U. often stands accused of complexity and detachment from...

Worn diagonally over one shoulder a la a messenger bag, the slings looked cool and promised what every new mother covets: a blissful baby, parent-child bonding and a free pair of hands for mom. Yet try as I might, I couldn't relax as I watched my newborn disappear into the voluminous folds of fabric. Was he so scrunched up it was hurting his neck? Could he breathe okay in there? Eventually, a friend gave me her old ERGObaby Carrier, which has been growing in popularity and hipness quotient in the past couple of years. Its myriad adjustments (side, back, front, with merely...

Last weekend on Saturday Night Live, NBC drove Tiger Woods hard. In a skit, faux Tiger and wife Elin held a press conference, which got interrupted after a surprised Elin heard Tiger admit he had made "multiple transgressions." The shot cut away, but then Tiger returned, arm in a sling, claiming that he accidentally fell down a flight of stairs and "launched [himself] through a plate-glass window." The audience chuckled. In the Weekend Update segment, Seth Meyers teed Tiger up, noting that his sponsors were sticking with him, "a gesture that only means one thing - women don't watch...
