Especially well done are large chorus numbers like "My Darlin' Eileen"--which features the rich harmonizing of a strong male chorus, ably performing Irish jig steps--and "Swing," a '30s number in which black-skirted and leotarded dancers slink their way across the stage...
Even the singing and dancing is kind of a letdown--it's good but not fantastic, certainly not "classic"--with the exception of an extended balletic sequence called "Broadway Melody," in which Kelly and Cyd Charisse slink around with lithe, animal sensuality. The ballet is a self-contained entity that has nothing to do with the plot, and its unmistakable 50s jazziness is completely out of the movie's 20s context. Kelly seems to have had a good idea for a dance number and just thrown it in as lagniappe, but it stands up well...

David Lewis does reliably unflappable matron Prune, waddling through both acts with his dignity intact even when his virtue has been lost. As the traditionally breathy and breasty torch singer, Tom Wells (Helza) has enough slink and alto in him to fill his shining jump-suit with credibility, and Mark Miller's One-Eyed Jack starts out as the most convincing and most spirited character of the whole, unsure crew...
