...evening around the Leuschner Observatory in Lafayette, Calif., a few enterprising rattlesnakes slither out to toast themselves on the asphalt parking lot, which retains the warmth of the sun long after the air has cooled. Inside, a 30-in. telescope begins a laborious computer-controlled search of the heavens, covering only a tiny patch of sky during the next six hours of darkness. And the following day, at the nearby University of California campus in Berkeley, Physicist Richard Muller, like a seer divining entrails, scrutinizes the new batch of video recordings from Lafayette. He seeks a sign...

...open now on Saturday nights. Sports and sitcoms illuminate the color TV. Lizards skitter down the screens on the porch, and alligators slither down the canal just beyond. Now and again someone will have a go at the organ, and Father Jim will sing in his tenor, "No more will I go all around the world,/For I have found my world in you!" Along with NBC Entertainment President Brandon Tartikoff, they devised a smalltown TV personality who would sell his first-born to make it to the big time. Tartikoff calls the character "a total sleaze-bag," comparing him to Archie Bunker but without Archie's tinge of lovableness. Says Producer...

...members of The Collaboration creep and crawl and slither onto the stage, swinging their arms around and shrieking like monkeys. One of them spots the microphone in the center of the stage reaches up, touches it, and screams. Then he straightens up, grabs the mike, scans the audience, and then, eyes directed up toward the heavens, says: "I've discovered comedy." And in the following two hours of skits and songs and improvisational routines. Boston's newest comedy group livens up the stage and introduces its audience to a pleasure most people outside Chicago have never previously discovered--live comedy...
