...tomorrow's couture, it also serves as a nostalgia trip through what has been Asia's freest colony. Here are a cool killer-drug queen (veteran stunner Brigitte Lin) and an indefatigable ingenue (pop pixie Faye Wang) exercising their wiles on lovelorn guys--all caught in Wong's murky, slo-mo camera eye. The twilight, late-night and hangover dawn of a civilization has rarely looked so ravishing...

Twelfth Night is a play transferred to film. Romeo and Juliet is, defiantly, a movie--an assault on Hollywood's conservative film language that might have come from a more playful Oliver Stone; call it Natural Born Lovers. Director Baz Luhrmann envelops Romeo and his goodfellas in portentous slo-mo for the shoot-outs, giddy fast-mo for comedy scenes. The camera literally runs circles around the lovers. From the first image--Renton jumps over the camera and hurtles down the street as store detectives chase after him, Iggy Pop's Lust for Life hammers the sound track, and Renton delivers his "Choose life" speech--the film is a nonstop visual and aural assault. Slo-mo, fast-mo, a hallucinogenic editing pace and the thick music of Scottish accents mean that you'll have to cram for Trainspotting. Attention must be paid, and will be rewarded with the scabrous savor of the movie's lightning intelligence. The subject is heroin, but the style is speed. This film...

...Jessica's flight plan found a receptive audience at the television networks. It was an ideal human-interest story. Upbeat. A natural narrative. Good visuals. A telegenic little girl with a dusting of freckles on her nose. A challenge. A record. Triumph. End with slo-mo of Jessica throwing her baseball cap in the air. Music from Chariots of Fire...
