...Edgar Hoover Building, home of the FBI, past the Treasury Department, past a few bemused Washingtonians, the march winds on for 45 minutes, spilling out onto the lap of the Capitol, under a shaky wooden stage. A few voices emerge from the sixties to start things off: Rev. William Sloan Coffin, now pastor of Riverside in New York; Peter Yarrow, who as the first third of Peter Paul and Mary did this sort of thing a long time...

...mechanism of IF's defense against viruses has also emerged. Explains Mathilde Krim, a researcher at Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: "Interferon is a kind of chemical Paul Revere." When a virus invades a cell, instead of turning out the proteins needed to sustain the cell and other parts of the body, the manufacturing plant begins to produce carbon copies of the virus. Eventually bloated with the alien bodies, the cell almost literally comes apart at the seams and dies, spilling out its cargo of new viruses, which promptly move toward healthy cells to repeat the process...

...layers of Shakespeare's meanings, to emerge restored and invigorated. Stage movement as much as language becomes a spade they use to unearth poetic ambiguities, in several mimes enacted to bits of Purcell's score: while a soprano sings a mournful aria, Stephen Rowe's Demetrius and Lisa Sloan's Helena wander about in a ghostly love-dance, with Helena reaching for and grasping Demetrius just as he turns away; after the night of illusion in the forest is over, and the lovers are rubbing the sleep and dreams from their eyes, they recap the confusions of their double-love...

...certainly John Bottoms's eponymous, stage-struck Bottom, Jeremy Geidt's paternal, befuddled Quince, Max Wright's scallion-chomping Flute and their cohorts dig up laughs you'd only guessed at, reading the play. But the young lovers, too, keep their scenes from bogging down into indistinguishable, interchangeable laments: Sloan's strong-willed and-armed Helena gets a hapless Demetrius into a half-nelson, and literally dogs his path with a graphic spaniel imitation; Eric Elice and Marianne Owen as Lysander and Hermia separate "as may well be said becomes a virtuous bachelor and a maid" before they fall asleep...

...ferociously competitive business, similar tactics of search and cultivation are used by major auction houses across the U.S.: Robert W. Skinner Gallery in Bolton, Mass.; Adam A. Weschler & Son and C.G. Sloan & Co. in Washington, D.C.; Mortons in New Orleans; San Francisco's Butterfield & Butterfield; West Palm Beach's Trosby Auction Galleries. The so-called country auction where the city slicker might once snap up for a song a Revere salver or a federal highboy is as distant a memory as the nickel newspaper. Says Scudder Smith, editor of Antiques and Arts Weekly, "You look around some...
