Smith won both races over the mile course in the basin yesterday and gained possession of the Slocum Trophy. The third crews do not row until this afternoon but Smith could finish last and still come out on top in the final reckoning. The first race was started from the Cottage Farm Bridge at 4 o'clock, the crews rowing across the Charles River Basin to the Harvard Bridge. Smith and Gore rowed side by side during most of the race, but a hundred yards from the finish Smith spurted and managed to shoot over the line a bare quarter...
