...when Taipei and Beijing agreed to start direct flights between Taiwan and China and open up tourism on the island to 3,000 Chinese visitors every day. The direct flights were a relief to the four million Taiwanese who travel to China every year, cutting a seven-hour slog to Shanghai, which had to be made through a third city like Hong Kong, to an 80-minute trip. The floodgates opened the other way, too: at first, a trickle of some 200 Chinese tourists each day in August, and now, seven months later, a pouring in at the maximum number...

Expect a two-day slog through dense rainforest, bare-bones style camping and blisters. From Guatemala City, it's a short flight to Flores, where you can organize guides, mules and equipment through a local outfitter (try www.nitun.com). The trail proper starts at the village of Carmelita and the wise will arrive in dry season (November to May), when the rainforest is scorching but mosquito- and mud-free. The journey is utterly exhausting, of course, but your inner Indiana Jones will exult at your first glimpse of El Mirador - thought to be home to around 80,000 at one time...

...Academy slog, as in the best old romances, there is a redemption angle. If Slumdog wins, the Hollywood establishment will have rewarded a foreign film, partly in Hindi, with no familiar faces, just a snazzy mixture of art and heart--and a movie that the audience, not the Academy, made into a hit. Isn't that worth tuning...
