Other models are in for smaller changes (except for slow-selling convertibles, which will be dropped altogether). The intermediate-size Rebel will sport little new styling, though its sales have been off by 23% during a year in which A.M.C.'s overall performance has shown modest improvement (233,000 cars so far, v. 207,000 in 1967). Much of the success has been due to the doughty American, which Chairman Roy M. Chapin decided to promote as a competitor to small foreign imports. So far, sales are slightly ahead of the 1967 pace -not bad for a car whose...

...twelve; other STOL-type planes that have begun to enter the U.S. air-taxi/commuter business, like Canada's De Havilland Otter and the Helio Courier, have only a fraction of McDonnell Douglas' payload. Fully loaded, the plane can cruise at 250 m.p.h., land at speeds as slow as 55 m.p.h. on a 500-ft. runway; it can take off within 1,000 ft. Finally, a camera style of slow and balanced moving shots is, successfully executed, one of the great joys of narrative film. When Chris goes to Paul to reassure him in a scene discussed earlier, Chabrol cuts together shots already in motion, joining a shot moving left in a circular are, a crane down from high angle, a forward track moving left, one moving right, and a pull back to wide-angle. The effect is again one of montage--the creation of masterful rhythm from smaller individual rhythms -- and again the illusion gives way to the truth of the image...
