...Shari'a law calls for the death penalty for those who convert to other religions, and although the penalty is not binding in most Muslim-majority states, persecution is common. This alone would not retard missions work. Most evangelists accept it as a cost of sharing faith. What did slow their efforts was a more prosaic measure: the gradual elimination by most Muslim countries of professional "religious worker" visas. Established organizations built around salaried missionary lifers found themselves hamstrung...

...high-energy, up-tempo tracks, including the album-opening standouts Crazy in Love (which has a thumping, hip-hop, wall-of-sound quality--it's already a Top 10 hit) and Naughty Girl (which peaks at Victoria's Secret levels of naughtiness). But the core of the album is slow and moody. Beyonce's voice is wonderfully emotive, yet songs like Me, Myself and I and Yes lack the youthful energy that makes her such an obvious star force. ...slow erosion of freedom was to be expected?the 1997 handover of a mercantile oligarchy to an authoritarian regime never looked promising for civil liberties. What is noteworthy is the way Article 23's opponents have been so gruffly shrugged off by an administration that appears intent on extending Beijing's control. This time, the cream of Hong Kong's chattering classes have been alienated by the maladroit way in which their criticisms have been handled. Bankers, lawyers, senior business figures, religious leaders, academics and teachers fear the legislation will give leadership the legal tools it needs to suppress dissent...

...touch the star riders," he says. "But Armstrong is like Michael Schumacher. You don't just walk up and touch him." There are other reasons the French have been cool to Armstrong. He hasn't had any French riders on his team for three years, he has been slow to embrace the French language and he moved his training base from Nice to Spain. His relationship with the French press, particularly Le Monde, which aggressively pursued rumors that Armstrong had used performance- enhancing drugs, has been prickly. Then there is that ennui produced by Armstrong's ruthless efficiency. "The French...
