...coverage is rising, but underwriters offer highly specific policies. A good driver in a tanklike SUV (less likely to be hurt by bad drivers) can get a rate cut. Sounds wacky, given that SUVs are more likely to cause injury to others. But, hey, like getting frugal in a slowdown, it's O.K. to think of yourself first...

...Greenspan kicked off the Clinton legacy in 1992 by selling the incoming president on deficit reduction, and in 2000 he'll be the gatekeeper for Bush's tax cut. This is also Greenspan's slowdown - he started it off himself with six interest-rate hikes that ended last spring, and if the soft landing gets ugly, it'll be Greenspan's shame, not Clinton's or Bush...

The government is basically bankrupt, and India is facing an economic slowdown. We're heading back into a terrible mess, but in a democracy as politically fractured as India's, it's hard to cut government spending. The alternative is privatization - the government owns everything from hotels to car factories, and all they've managed to privatize in recent years...
