Termed a miniature homing vehicle, or MHV, the warhead rests on the tip of an 18-ft. missile slung from the belly of a high-flying, specially equipped F-15 fighter. Guided by ground stations tracking enemy satellites, the F-15 climbs several miles into the sky and fires the missile. The two-stage rocket then boosts the warhead out of the atmosphere and into space. The telescopes in the nose of the MHV pick up infrared radiation emanating from the enemy satellite and focus it on a heat-sensitive targeting device. The device is housed in a small refrigerator...
...girl group; Madonna's two backup dancers are male and masculine. But they are small and unmenacing, dressed cheerfully in handpainted jeans and jackets, and when they frisk about the stage with Madonna the mood is light and childish. She wears spiked boots, black fishnet tights and a hip-slung miniskirt below her winking belly button. A loose- fitting hand-painted jacket swings free now and then to show a lacy purple shirt and the trademark black bra. She has a floppy purple rag tied in her hair. The costume is sexy, and light...

To them, the low-slung black wall would send the same old defeatist, elitist messages that had lost the war in the '60s and then stigmatized the veterans in the '70s. "Creating the memorial triggered a lot of old angers and rage among vets about the war," recalls Wheeler, a captain in Viet Nam and now a Yale-trained Government lawyer. "It got white...
...Last month, however, the card catalog served up its last title, author and book number. As part of the main library's $45 million face-lifting, the catalog room is being computerized, its 8,973 drawers and 10 million cards replaced by a central memory bank and 50 low-slung terminals. Instead of thumbing through stacks of 3-by-5 cards in search of a book, readers will now type a title or topic on a keyboard and watch the pertinent information flash onto a screen before them...
