Along with slush, broken toys and bills, one of the lingering misfortunes of every holiday season is the annual Disney movie, which displays a dismayingly hearty life span. The small screen, in fact, is probably more suitable for The Island at the Top of the World, where its dirigible would not look so much like a balloon left over from a parade, and its seething volcano would appear at least somewhat more menacing than an eruption on an adolescent's skin...
...Harry and Tonto, even if it amounts to no more than evasive slush in the end, makes a few fine and accurate observations along the way. When Harry meets the other elderly tenants in his building they talk about the TV shows of the night before, since they all watch TV and usually choose the same shows. This time, his counteroffensive was against the gathering danger of his impeachment, and the peripatetic President's message to the American public was that despite Watergate he was still greatly respected and needed abroad, and could still be welcomed and on top of things at home. But his travels provided Nixon with no more than a brief respite from the pressures...
