...last week to approving cheers was an Italian film called Smog, the first Italian feature film ever made on location in the U.S. Its message seems to be that people who live in glass houses are throwing their lives away, and the film itself throws quite a few rocks smack through the glassy eyes of Hollywood. It is about as focused as the rest of the world generally appears through the lenses of Hollywood, and is thus fine revenge as well as funny satire...

Seldom had Moscow witnessed such a display of public affection. An exultant Nikita Khrushchev kissed both spacemen smack on the lips, followed in turn by Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan and other members of the Presidium, as well as Russia's two previous cosmonauts, Ma jor Yuri Gagarin and Major Gherman Titov. As young women pelted them with flowers, the "Heavenly Twins," as the So viet press dubbed the cosmonauts, then hugged and embraced their families. Ten years ago, the major wired the castle for electricity, and now a TV set sits smack beneath Rembrandt's Flight into Egypt. A caged budgerigar chirps beneath Rembrandt's The Cradle. In addition, there is a Van Dyck ("A lovely one of a galloping horse," says the major) Rubens' portrait of Grotius ("Actually, they tell me now it may be a Van Dyck...

Chicanery? Last week Vienna art circles were in a quandary about the Verlon-Verkauf affair. The critics-including Dr. Hofmann-did not withdraw their praise for the collages, but Verkauf's elaborate hoax did seem to smack of chicanery. If Painter X can promote himself under the name of Dealer Y, Dr. Hofmann pointed out, he could carry the process one step farther and create a demand for Painter X by buying him under the name of Collector Z. Says Hofmann: "The unknown painter who buys his own works at auction to increase their value is not unknown...
