Northwestern has plenty of excuses: it is the only private school in the Big Ten, with fewer than 7,000 undergraduates (next smallest in the conference is Iowa with 24,000). Northwestern also believes football players should be able to read and write. A grade point average of at least 2.7 is required, compared with 2.2 at other Big Ten schools.
