Cigar Box Fleet. First in were the little LCVPs (Landing Craft Vehicles, Personnel). The second type in were LCMs (Landing Craft, Motorized), which put ashore small tanks and bigger vehicles. Next came LCTs (Landing Craft, Tanks), smallest of the ships which reached Sicily's shores under their own power. LCIs (Landing Craft, Infantry) came next, carrying nearly 200 men apiece. ...Smallest of the island objectives is humpy, volcanic Pantelleria (see map). Its single harbor, its one known airfield, its coastal and interior fortifications were bombed around the clock last week. Five times in seven days British naval guns raked the island's shores. Apparently Pantelleria was to be the first objective, perhaps with simultaneous moves against the other islands...

...Florey ended on the discouraging, realistic note that "penicillin is as yet available in only the smallest quantities." The A.M.A. gave a similar warning last week to U.S. doctors: though Merck & Co., E. R. Squibb & Sons, Charles Pfizer & Co and the Lederle Laboratories are all making penicillin, "in no instance has production advanced beyond the pilot-plant stage," and supplies for civilian use will be "exceedingly limited." The Army recently tried penicillin on a few veterans from the Pacific suffering from compound fractures, osteomyelitis and wound infections.
