...problems of state. With a quick parliamentary shuffle he bottled up a CCF (socialist) demand for Canadian recognition of Red China, thus earning Washington's warm approval. He coolly denied strife-torn Newfoundland (TIME, March 23) the lavish federal aid that the province wants (leading Liberal Premier Joseph Smallwood to cry "betrayal'' and drape provincial buildings in crape). Then, as the House droned toward Easter recess, weary John Diefenbaker caught a Saskatchewan-bound jet transport for a few days off on the anniversary of his monumental election victory a year ago this week...
...Brotherhood of Woodworkers; more profoundly, the island's economy is at issue. Two big newsprint producers, Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co. Ltd. and Bowater's Pulp & Paper Mills Ltd., are faced with the rising cost of cutting logs in Newfoundland's skimpy forests. Newfoundland Premier Joseph Roberts Smallwood, fearful that further cost increases might endanger the companies' operations, moved in to settle the dispute at Grand Falls. Liberal Smallwood, once a union organizer, rammed a bill through the provincial legislature decertifying the I.W.A., while personally creating the rival N.B.W.W. Most Newfoundlanders, including Smallwood's Conservative opposition...
Northern Future. Bow-tied Joey Smallwood, once a St. John's newsman, has been Premier through the whole decade of confederation. When he first took over, he earmarked some $25 million for an industrial development program that is beginning to produce results. Government-aided surveys turned up fabulous deposits of iron ore in Newfoundland's mainland territory of Labrador; one is now being mined, the other is scheduled to go into production in the 1960s. In Newfoundland and Labrador, surveyors uncovered promising finds of copper, lead and zinc, asbestos, fluorspar, gypsum and uranium. Perhaps even more significant...
...Newfoundland, where Premier Joey Smallwood is renowned as one of labor's best friends, one of labor's worst friends got a toe hold almost surreptitiously. Jimmy Hoffa and his racket-ridden International Brotherhood of Teamsters quietly set up two locals with 1,200 members. Alarmed, Smallwood last week bounced into the provincial legislature to denounce Hoffa & Co. as "pimps, panderers, white slavers, murderers, embezzlers, extortionists and dope peddlers." The legislators speedily responded with a sledgehammer law: the provincial government can now dissolve any local upon evidence that a "substantial number" of its union officers have been convicted...
...July 3, 1950, Letter Carrier Robert M. Dawson Jr. and his four small children were ordered off the municipal beach at Baltimore's Fort Smallwood Park and sent home. Reason: they are Negroes. The Dawsons took the case to court, and last December Baltimore's Federal District Judge Roszel C. Thomsen ruled that the family had no right to be at the Fort Smallwood beach, because Baltimore maintains separate but equal swimming facilities for Negroes. Judge Thomsen held that the U.S. Supreme Court, in its historic decision banning segregation in public schools (TIME, May 24), specifically "refrained from...
