...fairness to Boston's pitching staff. El Tlante, out ace is truly an ace-one of the best pitchers in the game. A few years ago, the Sex picked him upon waivers: Minnesota thought he was over the hill. It was a real aberration for the front office-a smart move, and Tiant has been a steady 20-game winner ever since. Luis has got style. Roger Angell of the New Yorker has called him "the archeologist" (because he picks up the ball and looks are it as if it were a fossil before he lets fly), and an early...

Hardly anyone today would dare to define the American promise in such grandiose terms. On the other hand, we can hardly return to the idyllic notion of leaving the rest of the world to its own devices except by setting an example. We may not be smart, rich or powerful enough to run the world, but we are certainly not smart, rich or powerful enough to maintain our prosperity and democracy in a world dominated by antagonistic forces and philosophies. ...Love and Death is Allen's stab at intellectual pretension. He teases love and death, duels and Dostoevsky, wars and warmongers. The movie opens with Boris in prison awaiting execution ("I go at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. I was supposed to go at 5 but I have a smart lawyer.") The plot itself is only quaintly wacky. A series of mishaps culminates in an assasination attempt on Napoleon's life, a tiresome case of mistaken identities is thrown in, and Boris finally trails off behind the Angel of Death in a flap-happy parody of The Seventh Seal. Where...

Edwards has directed some smart Hollywood entertainments (the under rated Darling Lili, for example) and two of the three previous Clouseau excursions. This one is the most raucous of the lot, and possibly the best. It may not be as wild or inventive as Woody Allen or Mel Brooks or the Monty Python team. But The Return of the Pink Panther is fully as funny, in its own brassy, uncomplicated way, and that is probably what counts...
