Three weeks ago, young thugs shot and killed a teenager in the cab of his pickup in a parking lot. So many cars were being attacked in "smash-and-run" incidents while passing the Nickerson Gardens housing project that authorities walled off the adjacent highway with a spiked metal fence. Fire Captain Tom Crowley says arson has become a spectator sport, with punks torching buildings "just to watch us work." Bobby Spears, 31, a janitor and father of four, knows...

...Crack, craack, craaaack," booms the sound through the rain forest. As the yellow 60-ton bulldozers smash ahead, one 70-ft. okoume tree after another trembles, then teeters and finally topples. With each fall, the jungle itself seems to shiver: venomous black and green mambas slither to safety through walls of vines; gorillas caper away in terror; mauve, violet and golden butterflies settle like confetti on the dozers, or bulls, as the workers call them. During the time since their early smash hits, both men have launched some money-losing flops. Wozniak dropped as much as $20 million in 1982 and '83 as promoter of California's US Festivals, two Labor Day rock extravaganzas. With some $70 million of his fortune left, Wozniak resigned from Apple early last year to develop an infrared remote-control device capable of simultaneously operating several types of components, including TV sets and videocassette recorders. So far, his CL9, an abbreviation of "cloud nine," is not profitable and has produced only one product, a $30 device that amplifies the signal...
