That horrible smell turned out to be issuing from two sulphur bombs, commonly known as stink bombs, planted in Langdell earlier that evening by person or persons unknown. Two Circulation Desk attendants, Lawrence Corbett and Alfrado Ochoa, followed their noses and found a shoebox containing one bomb outside the door of the south entrance to the Reading Room.
