Is it not as well to avoid an absolute imitation of a conversation even when one is reporting it? Do such expressions as "and I-well, I rather liked her-you needn't smile, I didn't care much about her" or "and dignified!-by George ! I've never seen anything like it" help the flow of the narrative any ? This is merely a suggestion, not an implication that the use of the expressions in this story is a serious injury...
