DURING HIS PHENOMENAL rookie year in 1976, Mark Fidrych shied away from the self-congratulatory stardom of major league baseball. When asked about his pitching with the Detroit Tigers, he would smile and say, "It's no big deal." When agents urged him to cash in on his success financially, he would answer, exuberantly, "I play baseball." And the fans loved him, they had never seen anything like him. Tall, gawky, like a stork out of water, Fidrych stepped on the field with a flurry of limbs, hair and mutterings. Not since Dizzy Dean bamboozled his way into the national...
...discovering some Freudian flaws deep in Caroline's psyche, the cynical viewer gets the sadistic pleasure of watching a helplessly idealistic relationship march inexorably to its demise. At this point, those in the audience who have never been through this painful process will weep, and those who have will smile smugly, nod their heads and derive a pleasant satisfaction from knowing that they were not the only ones...

Effortlessly, she convey's Pomme's unique charm through a crooked smile, a flash of the eyes, or a sudden grimace. Shyly licking clean a spoon of chocolate ice cream when she meets Francois, Huppert is as absorbed in the eating as she is in the flirting--her Pomme is guileless. The only flaw in the performance must be attributed to a weakness in the script: although Huppert is a convincingly distraught Pomme at the end of the film, it's difficult to believe...
