...their home in the Western Hills area of Peking, usually with Vice Premier Wan Li and Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang. Deng has a fondness for pomelos, a grapefruit-like citrus fruit grown in Sichuan, and he sometimes places special orders for them. He is also a world-class smoker, lighting one Panda-brand cigarette after another in his meetings and audiences. Deng recently declared to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, "Mine is a hands-off policy, I let other people do things." On the visible evidence, that is just another sly Deng understatement. --By William R. Doerner. Reported...
...addiction and thus killed him. But last week a jury in Santa Barbara, Calif., voted 9 to 3 that Galbraith's lawyer Melvin Belli had not proved that smoking necessarily caused Galbraith's death or that he was a tobacco addict. The panel of eleven nonsmokers and one smoker agreed with Reynolds' attorney Thomas Workman that Galbraith "smoked because he loved it. He knew the risks involved and took them...
Humphrey Bogart was a brilliant smoker. He taught generations how to hold a cigarette, how to inhale, how to squint through the smoke. But as a kisser, Bogart was an awful example. He then acquired the rights to 65 of TV's most memorable sound tracks and hired Composer Dave Erlanger, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, to produce the record. Erlanger re-created some songs that were unavailable or too scratchy to use. At $16.95, Gottlieb's album has sold 225,000 copies...
...only when Woodward descends into the darkness of a parking garage to consult with Deep Throat that the movie briefly becomes a real noirish melodrama. The filmmakers made Deep Throat a smoker, which some say he was not, to give him a Robert Mitchum air, which was surely not something we would now impute to Felt. But Hal Holbrook gives a gnomic, cranky performance as Deep Throat. (Shouldn't there be an Oscar for best performance by an actor you can barely see?) And director Alan Pakula added menacing off-camera sound effects to Holbrook's scenes--a mysterious bump...
