...both by a tape produced using subway noises and conversations, and by the ensemble of flute, tow clarinets, celesta and piano. The sounds of the instruments filter in from outside of the theater hall, while the tape is projected directly into the hall. The mimes move between a pastoral, smooth kind of work and more isolated, abstract industrial motions, supported by two levels and qualities of sound...
...unique and vital quality of softness not often found in her jazz contemporaries. Her voice tingles, hums and vibrates on combination of Minnie Ripperton and notes from high to low, sounding like a Denice Williams. With the exception of occasionally explosive tracks, the tone is predominantly soft and smooth. She plays a masterful improvisation of the keyboard in an acoustic piano solo, "Hang it Up." Some Magnavox discs play for 30 min. a side, but movies take 60 min. RCA's discs, which will all play for 60 min., are grooved like records, and a stylus...
...Measure for Measure is technically smooth and well-directed--see it for its good spirits and evenness. But it lacks that overall sense of control which can guide an audience to new thoughts about old questions. The scenes between Angelo and Isabella hint that the company could pull this off and Measure for Measure will still be waiting when they're ready...
