...prostitutes who, mixed with the tourists, listen to reggae and puff joints, a scene more than one suburban teenager has imagined while listening to Marley or Jimmy Cliff. The most ubiquitous dealer on the beach goes by the name of Doctor Fabulous. "Da Doctor" is a self-assured smooth talker, a "Rastafarian who smoke da ganga anywhere, anytime." Along with his potentsmelling crop, Fabulous deals out lines like "Da doctor needs his patient," and "I am da backbone of Jamaica." When he meets a student from Kentucky, he says that Kentucky in Jamaica "is where all da girls want their...

...Bitches Brew, a sonic eye opener that experimented with electric instruments and rock and funk rhythms--a strange, primal, remarkable album. Soon, however, a whole generation of musicians was squandering its talents on increasingly vapid (though profitable) jazz-rock hybrids that came to be called fusion. Known today as smooth jazz, or as "that crap they play when Regis and Kathie Lee go to commercial," fusion continues to thrive; it even has its own Billboard chart. However, his artistry is completely lacking and his acting seemed extremely strained and forced; it was just not enough for the role of Hilarion. Patrick Armand's acting completely overpowered Yanowsky's, and made for lopsided encounters and a lackluster revelation of Albrecht's true identity. Yanowsky has the technical capability. He just desperately needs to work on his acting and artistry...

Working with jazzy back beats and the smooth abstract poetics of rapper Q-Tip, The Love Movement offers a few of the classic Tribe head bobbers, but the majority of the album tends to be devoted to relaxed raps about love. Busta Rhymes joins in on "Steppin' It Up," but the synergy of past ventures doesn't quite reappear, and the song, as do many aspects of the album, sounds halting and deliberate. Q-Tip waxes an eloquent soliloquy in "The Love" about love in all forms, but for every one of these slick arrangements, there is a lame...
