Kennedy was brief and smooth. Was he "upset" about being Reagan's third choice? "I am delighted with this nomination," he deadpanned, to laughter. Was he concerned about the "intense scrutiny" he would face? Said the judge diplomatically: "I'm looking forward to this scrutiny that the Senate should give any nominee in the discharge of its constitutional duty...
Many of the performances are good imitations of old gangster film types. Schrag is the little tough guy, like Edward G. Robinson or James Cagney. Hatch is slimy and smooth-talking. Alexander shows Roma's fierce loyalty to Ui, even when Ui betrays him, but he is also believably vengeful when he returns as a ghost to haunt Ui, a la Banquo...
...free front-page ad. Every argument at a cocktail party or around an office coffee machine keeps this monster movie alive. Even career women who take the film as libel have to see it, if only to know the enemy up close. Maybe Hitchcock was right when, to smooth the feathers of one of his stars, he cooed, "It's only a movie, Ingrid." Maybe Fatal Attraction is just a nine-weeks wonder. More likely, though, it will linger in the American central nervous system. A single woman may have to go to the personals column for her next beau...

The handicap did, however, contribute to the dramatic tension--will he or won't he make it up to the high platform? Carleton's sidekick character, Heuteboise, is hilarious...
...Japanese, virtually tribal in their consensual citizenship, have a fairly smooth decision-making process. The Prime Minister, a product of the Diet (Parliament), reports weekly to the legislature in what Columbia Law School's Michael Young calls an "environment of interaction, conciliation and accountability." In addition, Japanese politicians "engage in continual and intense negotiation with the private sector." In America, the President and Congress constantly collide, as do the Government and business...
