Even the TV attacks are designed less to change minds than to mobilize believers. Schumer will hit D'Amato for breaking his promise not to run for re-election this year, and he'll sample from the smorgasbord of D'Amato scandals for whatever looks fresh and juicy. D'Amato will go after Schumer for voting against welfare reform, the Gulf War and whatever else his researchers can dig up. With two weeks to go, says D'Amato, "we're just getting started." This chatty smorgasbord is nominally about Cecilia Bartoli, but the greater part is a hilarious collection of anecdotes, gossip and shrewd observations concerning that unique branch of humanity, the opera singer. Tenors are uncommonly stupid; divas, when they are not scarfing down pasta, are outrageously unreliable. The imperious troublemaker Kathleen Battle, feeling chilly in a limo in Los Angeles, is said to have telephoned her manager in New York City and ordered him to call her driver to ask him to turn down the air conditioning. Romano's gourmet smorgasbord has mouth-watering numbers too. EatZi's has sales per sq. ft. of $1,500, easily outdistancing the $200 at regular grocery stores. Even tastier are EatZi's profit margins. At 12% to 15% of sales, they are more than four times the 2% to 3% that most grocers bag. Having tinkered with the concept for a couple of years, Romano is taking EatZi's national. Already in Dallas and Houston, EatZi's opened last month in Atlanta and will stock shelves in Westbury, N.Y., and Manhattan by the end of this year. "Women come...
