...without purpose, according to Rosovsky. The last three decades have left Gen Ed--what Rosovsky says should be "the common denominator of a Harvard-Radcliffe education"--the victim of undirected flux. As one University Hall administrator said recently, "The Gen Ed program today is interesting but it's a smorgasbord; there is no real philosophy behind it any more...

Just north of the hi-fi jungle on Boylston St., the Wursthaus building sits in commercial effulgence, noisily crowing its own merits with pretentious signs, ornate flags and a smorgasbord-style window that is chock-full of brand-names. The decor is pretty much the same inside, and if you sit facing the wrong way, your meal will be highlighted by a neon ticker that tells you what you will want to masticate. Legitimate theaters and respectable restaurants have been imperiled by an invasion of porno movie houses, peep shows, sleazy eateries and a grab bag of other dubious enterprises. Understandably, this kind of low-life smorgasbord attracts some of the strangest night creatures ever to adorn a modern city. They range from nattily dressed black pimps in high heels to gaudily painted transvestites to the "Christmas-tree man," whose head, coat, shut and pants are festooned with tinsel and trinkets. Snaking stealthily through this Brueghelian scene...
