...Mathews donned a particularly ghoulish mask of ignorance for his article on "Why Harvard [sic] Is Sick of Radcliffe." His crude sexism offends us all. Harvard, for which Joe Mathews blithely claims he is speaking, is not anti-woman or anti-Radcliffe. The last time I looked around here, snide machismo was out of favor with men as with women. Radcliffe College is a revered part of this institution--revered not just by its alumnae. It is more than fair to say that Harvard benefits immeasurably from Radcliffe's programs for education, research and public policy...
Jimmy is an intolerably boorish young man. His rear planted firmly in his easy chair, he spouts ironically muscular, violent language, insulting everyone and everything he can. McPartland's looks--his long hair and sideburns, unathletic body, and snide, lazy expression--are well suited to the role. But the actor's line delivery is bogged down by Jimmy's endless, easy-chair-bound monologues: McPartland rushes his lines and slips into droning recitation. This problem fades as the play progresses; as Jimmy's interactions with other characters increase, McPartland's performance shows more and more energy...
First, I must tell you that rare is the occasion when I pick up a pen to write such a letter but the unusually snide tone of those reviews really offended me and I very much want to convey these feeling to you. I am not a personal friend of Alek Keshisian's but I found your attacks against him and his work completely unnecessary and indefensible. you neglected to mention that Alek (according to my niece, a Harvard student), graduated summa cum laude. You preferred to focus on irrelevant nonsense such as his asthmatic difficulties and likening...
...place of the Bunting Institute (who needs graduate fellowships, anyway?) the Radcliffe Center could host a series of workshops to help conservatives deal with the pressures of living amongst all those vicious liberals. Prospective editorialists could cultivate that characteristic snide tone of voice. Brow-beaten moralists could learn to cope in the presence of revision and plurality...
...Guys and Dolls, they have kept the show in period but with attitude -- sardonically exaggerated sets, saturated colors, a heightened performing style that lets audiences feel it's O.K. to be a little distant from the world of the play. Period references have been added, many with a snide edge not found in the original. The devil says he's been busy designing an Edsel, the Ford fiasco that went onto the market two years after the show first opened. When he envisions a gallery of great lovers through history, he mentions FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, a sacred...
