...another point, Cloud's tone towards the senator's style of sincerity seems rather snide for an objective analysis of a candidate. By labeling the senator's singing of "And the Band Played 'Waltzing Mathilda'" as "hoaky," Cloud seems to be injecting an unnecessary brand of brash disdain towards any outward displays of emotion. If Cloud were to ask several Vietnam veterans in the national campaign who were angered by his article, we're sure that he would find it less than a "hoaky" matter to many people...
...Joel's friend conjures up an Indian spirit to help locate his father; the town deejay, meanwhile, has his voice stolen by a beautiful girl. One whimsical fantasy per episode, please. The show's patronizing attitude toward small towners is more subtle but just as annoying. One episode makes snide fun of the tavern owner's 19-year-old girlfriend, who gets a satellite dish and becomes addicted to tacky TV fare like Wheel of Fortune and the Home Shopping Network. God forbid somebody in a remote Alaskan town should actually pass the time watching TV. What would Voltaire think...

The Spanish word for left-handed, zurdo, means malicious. If you are gauche (left) in France, you are tactless and unsophisticated. Adroit comes from the French a droit (to the right), and we know what maladroit means -- especially when we see a left-handed violinist bowing northwest while the rest of the string section is northeast. A left-handed compliment is not nice, but a right-hand man is indispensable...
Still, Feinstein prefers snide references to Wilson as just another boring male pol ("Change is more than exchanging one pinstripe suit for another in Sacramento"). Though sartorial satire by a man about a woman candidate would be regarded as sexist, Feinstein is getting away with it. The latest distracting dustup started two weeks ago, when Feinstein heckled Wilson about his poor Senate attendance record. Go back to Washington to help out in the government budget wrangle, she taunted him, and I'll suspend campaigning. Last week Wilson returned to the capital because of the deficit showdown. I personally agree with Cohen on many points and would not allow the Steering Committee, as a body, to slander his intentions. It is, however, imposible to prevent individual Steering Committee members from directing snide comments at their ideological opponents.
