...valleys, every mission detailed by the Air Force in its daily "airpower summary" has been deemed a success. In July, B-1 bombers began striking Afghan targets with 500-lb. bombs guided to their prey by a new targeting pod slung under the plane's belly. Known as the Sniper, the pod sends long-range, high-resolution video--it can tell whether an Afghan on the ground is armed--right into the cockpit. Such weapons systems allow the U.S. military to rain steel on the Taliban from on high, even when troops aren't in the area. The Pentagon doesn...
When I worked as a reporter in besieged Sarajevo in 1994 and 1995, I sometimes fantasized (as many who experienced Serb shell and sniper fire did) about the eventual arrest of Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. I imagined him in handcuffs, decked out in his camouflage military attire or in one of his trademark double-breasted suits, his silver plume of well-coiffed hair a reminder of the lifestyle he maintained even after he choked off water supplies to his former home city...
...Alma form a kind of family with the math teacher's daughter, but that hasn't nearly the dramatic heft needed to fill in the cracks around the disintegrating main story. What you get is a lot of impotent anger, people walking into harm's way and the sniper-like picking off of supporting players - all the dumbest tropes of horror movies, without the robust scares a good thrill-fest delivers. It's a sorry enough spectacle to make admirers of The Sixth Sense wonder if they didn't overrate that movie, and the director's whole oeuvre? Is Shyamalan...

It's hard to take anything a candidate says seriously when it can be rendered inoperative two nights later with a Letterman Top 10 list. When she was caught making up a story about sniper fire in Bosnia, Clinton's apology was so casually dismissive you might have thought it was just another Jon Stewart bit. And it's probably just a matter of time, once the Rev. Wright resurfaces as an issue in the general election, before Barack Obama really is asked (Stephanopoulos, want...
...Chapman announced again that he wants to his lawyers to stop fighting for his life. "I guess it's kind of my Christian upbringing," he told an AP reporter. "Suicide is unforgivable. I figure if I'm not doing it to myself, it's not a suicide." The Beltway sniper John Allen Muhammed also raised his hand briefly, asking in a letter for the state to go ahead and "murder this innocent black man." (He later reversed course and said through his lawyers he would continue to appeal his sentence...
