A policeman assigned to investigate the violence was then wounded by a sniper. The bottles and rocks were flying again...

...trying to reconstruct Oswald's flight from the sniper's nest in the Book Depository Building, the commission allowed for a near miraculous series of coincidences and split-second timing. In the 46 minutes between the assassination at 12:30 and the first report of Officer Tippit's slaying, Oswald is supposed to have dashed down six flights, slipped out of the building, walked seven blocks, boarded a bus, got off, found a taxicab, returned to his rooming house, donned a jacket, then turned up nearly a mile away and killed Tippit...

...member organization that spends perhaps $2,000,000 a year pushing its official line in pamphlets, pressure on Congress, gun-magazine advertisements and its own publication The American Rifleman. In the face of renewed clamoring for congressional gun control action, spurred by Charles Whitman's recent sniper rampage in Austin, Texas, the N.R.A. last week turned for a change to newspapers, buying full-page spreads in the Washington Post and the New York Times, both of which have editorialized vigorously for stronger gun laws. ...Republican leader in the House, Rep. Gerald Ford of Michigan, does not offer smiling generalities. Nor does he call heavy federal spending socialistic, or term effective civil rights legislation "unconstitutional" as Goldwater has done. Ford is a pragmatic sniper; he votes against open housing legislation because it's "divisive" and harps on the Administration's failure to cope with prosperity-ridden inflation by cutting spending, i.e. cutting back anti-poverty programs and foreign aid. And his strategy, like Reagan's may work to some extent...
