It makes you wonder whether you yourself, possibly, or let's say your grandmother, might have appeared, smiling, in a photograph of a lynch mob. And just as you're about to block out that queasiness, Twain slams in a snippet of what a particularly despicable lynching (in Texas, as it happened) was like. Oh, God. (The man was slow-roasted to death over a coal-oil fire.) And then, when he starts taking off on the missionaries? I don't know that I want to express this opinion. But there...

...fact, last month Zuckerberg announced Facebook Connect, which would allow users to take their contact lists with them to websites that add a snippet of code. Over time, it will be possible for, say, a blog owner to embed a Facebook-style "wall" on his or her site, which would allow one to read only the comments scrawled there by friends. Her snippet of Valerie with Mark Ronson was technically brilliant, but the fresh-out-of-rehab singer just couldn't engage, not with Ronson, not with the audience and not with the song. Staring out into the middle-distance most of time, she was just phoning it in. But back on stage half an hour later was a whole other Winehouse. I [wrote a little and Mellencamp did some music] and then I went to him and said, "We've reached a decision point here. Neither of us knows s--- about theater. The only thing I know is that, at this point, it either becomes like Andrew Lloyd Webber - and everybody sings everything - or it can be like My Fair Lady, where people actually talk in between the singing. They...

...place. Google is spending a fortune to scan millions of library books into a massive database because to Google's all-seeing eye, books are a hopelessly inefficient way to store information. That doesn't mean books are obsolete. You can use Google Books to retrieve a single valuable snippet of information from a book, but you could never actually read a whole book on a computer screen. The Sony Reader isn't going to displace the humble book anytime soon either. Just to get Kite Runner onto the Reader, I had to charge it, find a computer running Windows...
