...police sharpshooters patrolled the surrounding rooftops outside, Jury Foreman Octavio Mandulay slowly announced the verdicts. There were five counts of murder and one count of rioting against each of the six defendants. As the litany of "not guilty" grew, a relative of one of the accused choked back a sob. By the time the 36th and final "not guilty" was called out, the defendants themselves were weeping...
Their targets picked, the men representing the National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC), Christian Voice, Moral Majority and local groups like Ship Out Bayh (SOB) and Anybody But Church (ABC), went to work, raising money, registering voters and turning out pamphlets and television commercials, all designed to put the incumbents on the defensive. Stressing issues like abortion, defense spending, and "social engineering," the conservatives started to hammer away, and in every case, their efforts seemed to be working, for each state, if presidential returns are any indication, is more conservative than its senator...
...Bayh so far has resisted the combined efforts of SOB, Indiana Right to Life, Moral Majority and NCPAC. The song climaxes as Elvis taunts her for her shallowness: "You can't feel, you can't feel," his voice echoing in her vacuity, while Bruce Thomas's almost bored bass thrums luridly...
...first three albums, Elvis didn't let go too much; he was beyond disgust, he claimed, he was only amused, it was safer to sneer than sob. Perhaps sensing his emotional limitations, Elvis recorded "Big Tears" on a single last year, in which he accused his partner of calculated crying, empty tears, while dissolving into sobs himself. It was a pretty good song (though not good enough for inclusion on Armed Forces, undercut by an unexpansive melody and Costello's lack of vocal control). The concept reappears on Get Happy!! in "B Movie," this time with a meaner, more controlled...
