Akpan was one of 20 players, including nine professionals, pared down from an initial list of 70 by veteran U-20 Coach Thomas Rongen, himself a native of the Netherlands. The squad will compete...

Kate Markgraf, assistant coach for the Harvard women’s soccer team, will travel to Carson, Calif. from January 11-15 to take part in training camp for the U.S Women’s National team. This weekend’s training camp will give head coach Greg Ryan a chance to evaluate the 28 players he has invited to Carson before whittling his roster down to 20 players. "I'm ashamed of this country," in which "the whites are lousy," he groused, and would soon be fielding teams "where all 11 players are black." That echoed a comment a year earlier by philosopher Alain Finkelkraut, who - seeking to explain the 2005 rioting by youths descended...

...last five months, Mogadishu had enjoyed its first respite from 15 years of clan war, after the Islamic Courts Union - an alliance of clerics and sympathetic warlords - drove the last four independent warlords out of the capital. The Courts won few fans for their attempts to ban music, soccer, cinemas and qat, the local plant traditionally chewed for its mild stimulant effect. But their success in imposing law and order, and their unexpected ability to rise above clan rivalries, won them almost universal respect...
