...Professor Heimert. On the one hand, he learned at Berkeley that "a great big, impersonal university just doesn't make it;" on the other hand, people just can't be thrown together in the Houses, placed under charge of administrators and told to interact--that would be "cheap social engineering." The solution is to recruit Masters who are committed to the intellectual goals of the university and to the social goals of the Houses. Heimert no doubt sees himself as this kind of compound figure. But his whole disposition make him skittish about organizing other people's lives...
...those whose target was society, an evil and unjustifiable war, and the University's supposed connections with social injustice, they often argue that students who feel impotent both as citizens and as a minority with limited rights and powers can make their influence felt only in the University. And I found him calling radical "criminals" and talking about a wave of "anti-intellectualism" sweeping the University. He pointed out that even some of the most liberal Faculty people in the social sciences had opposed the Heimert resolution, which passed, he said, only with the votes of a lot of biologists and physicists who weren't going to have anything to do with black studies. The History Department now fully expected to see Eldridge Cleaver brought in to direct a slate...
