...telling measure of parental attention is homework. A 1984 study of San Francisco-area schools by Stanford Sociologist Sanford Dornbusch found that Asian-American students put in an average of eleven hours a week, compared with seven hours by other students. Westinghouse Prizewinner John Kuo recalls that in Taiwan he was accustomed to studying two or three hours a night. "Here we had half an hour at the most." To make up the difference, John and his two brothers were often given extra assignments at home. "Asian parents spend much more time with their children than American parents...
Theories abound, but answers remain elusive. Perhaps the most promising approach grows out of the work of Black Sociologist William Julius Wilson of the University of Chicago, who popularized the concept of the underclass in his 1978 book The Declining Significance of Race. Wilson and his philosophical allies reject the simplistic single-factor theories of cause and effect, which range from the permissiveness of welfare to the pervasiveness of racism. Instead, they stress the ever widening social and economic gap between ghetto residents and the rest of American society, both white and black...
...image of the ship of state. In 1857 Macaulay told an American, "Your Constitution is all sail and no anchor." (A foreigner's elegant remark. Others suspect that the Constitution has entirely too much anchor -- too many checks and balances -- to make any headway at all.) The sociologist David Riesman likens the Constitution to the shallow keel of the national ferryboat, on which the passengers keep shifting from port to starboard and back again. One might also suggest the image of a trimaran -- a craft with three hulls (Legislative, Executive and Judicial) that is both stable and fast. Harvard...
...Robinson broke baseball's color line, Los Angeles Dodgers Executive Al Campanis has remarked on how buoyant and fit for command blacks aren't, and he has been fired. Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth and Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson have joined forces in the cause of affirmative action, and black Sociologist Harry Edwards has hired on as a consultant. Baseball is publicly standing up to racism. And, one year after George Foster was derided and expelled for bringing up the subject, the World Champion New York Mets have three blacks on the entire roster, four counting Shortstop Rafael Santana, a Latin...
...Arboretum, a popular spot for local outings, is becoming a walled fortress. Managers are erecting a series of 40-ft.-high earth berms to protect the trees and shrubs from the lethal effect of de-icing salt splashed up by heavy traffic on the neighboring tollway. Mark Baldassare, a sociologist at the University of California at Irvine, predicts that by the 21st century Orange County traffic will become so hopelessly jammed that "the people in Irvine, for example, will rarely decide to go to another village. They will stay in their own small areas...
