The grandstand and enclosure were nearly filled toward noon, when an agitated hare came humping down the home stretch, crossed the finish line and dodged into the paddock...

Allied is a holding company whose operations may be divided into five groups: The Solvay Process Division produces soda ash and caustic soda, in both of which products there was unexpected price-cutting during December when 1931 contracts were being made. Earnings from this division are thought to be running 40% below last year. Its big competitor is Mathieson Alkali Works, Inc. When it was absorbed by Allied, the Solvays of Belgium, one of Europe's richest families, acquired much Allied stock. They also have a big interest in Imperial Chemistry Industries of Britain...

After passing through a "haircatcher" which picks up any lint from bathing suits, the water is heated to between 72 and 75 degrees. It next runs through two coagulant pots, of soda ash and alum, which prevent undue acidity. The great work of filtration is done by a tank containing 27 tons of graded Cape May, New Jersey sand, through which the water will seep. Before entering the pool it will be impregnated with chlorine gas, which lends a greenish color. The results are tested twice daily by comparing a test-tube full of water with a graded color chart...
