Some serious historians have worried about the parallels between U.S. and Roman history, but Reagan's approach is more polemical than historical. He selected phenomena from several centuries of Roman history and touched up the facts a bit to suit his moral. Reagan really should begin research on Sodom and Gomorrah. What Perrin's survey makes alarmingly evident is that bowdlerizing could become almost as unbridled a lust as lust itself. An expurgator may begin quietly enough by "lopping" or "cutting." ...thought that Sweden was bad, but Sweden hasn't gone near to the depths of various sex deviations and obsessions that we have gone. I suppose there are sections of this country that have sunk as low as anything in history, because in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah and Pompeii and Rome they didn't have the presses or the motion pictures to stimulate all of this...

Fritz's hobby seems to have been small boys. He transformed a Capri grotto into a scented Sodom, where attendants wore the habit of Franciscan friars and skyrockets were fired to celebrate orgasms. Photographs were taken and circulated. Eventually, reports of the goings on were published in the press. Kaiser Wilhelm rushed to the support of Fritz. But the scandal was too much, and Fritz committed suicide...
