Another key is adaptability. Ashwell's line is designed so that sheets, shower curtains and slipcovers can blend in with existing home furnishings. And Oldham's LaZBoy furniture and accessories--which he calls "personality amplifiers"--are multifunctional. A retro-looking sofa transforms into a bench, a settee or a chaise, and sectionals can be arranged in any configuration imaginable. No need to fluff these pillows...

...recent afternoon, Elizabeth Cody comes bounding down the stairs to greet her mother, who has just returned from work. There is nothing froglike or vegetative about the bright-eyed 19-year-old, who flops onto the sofa and expresses relief that her mother has remembered to bring home a chart showing exactly which part of her 18th chromosome is missing. Couch creatures now have to look for only one remote between the sofa cushions, not three or four, thanks to Canada's Ontario-based Intrigue Technologies. Its new Harmony SST 659, which retails for $199, enables you to control your television, DVD player and stereo with a single device. Unlike earlier all-purpose models, it doesn't require you to have a computer-science degree to make it work. Just connect the remote to your computer through the USB cable included in the package, tell the Harmony Web page the make and model number of your gear...
