...back to the flagship. Sea Leopard was destroyed. Nothing was left. Only the sea, ominous and black and still. And 40 miles away, on the bridge of the Valley Forge, Admiral Jimmy Thach silently studied the reports of the submarine's death. The kill had come under relatively soft circumstances: Sea Leopard was nonnuclear, its "missile" countdown had required it to expose itself on the surface for 15 minutes-yet it still got off its shot. As compared to a nuclear submarine, able to fire a Polaris-type missile while still submerged, Sea Leopard was a mere seagoing perambulator...
This phrase keynotes the bright dialogue of this bright new novel. What is a Jumble? The term is a kind of Joycean jive for Johnbull, blurred by soft voices and subtle minds to a new sound. The word is used by London's fast-growing population of West Indian and African Negroes. In their eyes, the whites whose town they have invaded are confused and confusing, square as tea chests, Jumbled in their thoughts about Spades. One of Gromyko's top aides, Semyon Tsarapkin, kept a beady eye on things, but the top Soviet scientist, jovial Evgeny Fedorov, turned out on occasion to be freer to make decisions without consulting home than the Westerners (including scientists from Britain, France and Canada). After seven weeks' discussion...
Platero is small, downy, smooth-so soft to the touch that one would think he were all cotton, that he had no bones. He eats everything I give him. He likes tangerines, muscatel grapes, all amber-colored, and purple figs with their crystal points of honey...
...Writer Walt Kempley comes into the dressing room with the news that he has found a gun that shoots soft bullets. How about a duel with Genevieve to see who can draw the fastest? Often such gimmicks are the bright spots of a show (a mechanical fish-eating fish was brought back for numerous encores, as was a pair of "binoculars" that were actually half liquor flask). But tonight Paar is not in the mood. "I need a show," he snaps...
