...ever explore without exploiting? Right now the lunar virgin is fertile soil for extensive scientific research. Let's leave it that way and, for once, be anti-utilitarian...
...seeking answers, we plan to clarify and explore man's long-ignored physical dependence on the biosphere -earth's thin envelope of air, water and soil in which life exists. Almost every week now brings new warnings of impending ecological upsets within our planet's infinitely interdependent chain of life processes: certain birds becoming extinct, hauls of inedible fish, mysterious animal sickness. Environment will tackle, for example, the effects of such forms of pollution as DDT pesticides and radioactive waste, chemical fertilizers and hot water from nuclear power reactors; it will explore the cacophony of modern noises...
EVEN before the Apollo 11 astronauts were flown to Houston, a cargo nearly as precious was rushed to the Manned Spacecraft Center. Transported separately so that the whole shipment could not be lost in a single accident, two boxes containing some 60 lbs. of lunar soil and rocks were flown off the U.S.S. Hornet in two helicopters and taken to Johnston Island. From there, they were airlifted aboard two planes directly to Houston, then trucked to the Lunar Receiving Lab (LRL). The space agency gave the rocks such VIP treatment that NASA Administrator Thomas Paine, Robert Gilruth, director...
Later, after reopening the hatch, the astronauts tossed out LM equipment unnecessary for the return trip, their backpacks, boots and other items that had been exposed to lunar soil and dust. Then, their lunar excursion successfully completed, they settled down to a relaxed meal and a rest. It was strange to think that while much of the U.S. slept, two Americans were also sleeping in their cramped quarters on the distant and silent moon. Some 21 hours after landing on the moon, Armstrong and Aldrin were ready to blast off in the five-ton upper stage of the lunar module...
...progress of Luna 15, the unmanned Soviet moon probe launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome three days before their blast-off from Cape Kennedy. The Russians cloaked Luna's mission in characteristic secrecy. Some scientists speculated that it was a "scoopy" shot designed to dig up some lunar soil and return it to earth before a manned Apollo mission could accomplish the feat. Others thought it might be a "snoopy" shot aimed merely at orbiting the moon and returning with photographs and telemetered data. Many Westerners suggested that it was, above all, a sour-grapes shot...
