...currency change and past protectionism have spurred the explosive growth of Japanese manufacturing facilities on U.S. soil. Honda and Nissan operate plants in Ohio and Tennessee, respectively, that together produce 560,000 vehicles annually. Vanunu, 32, was last seen in London on Sept. 30 after giving the London Sunday Times information that allegedly proved Israel has operational atomic weapons. Senior Israeli officials, anxious to quash reports that Vanunu had been kidnaped on British soil, insisted he had left the country "of his own volition." Two weeks ago Carlos Tunnermann, the capable Nicaraguan Ambassador to Washington, gave up that post to become his country's representative to the Organization of American States. Says one U.S. official: "They don't want to lose him, in case the embassy here gets shut down...
...begun three generations ago, when Ellis Island teemed with immigrants. A few of them had gone west -- about 100 miles west (and north) of Manhattan -- to try farming Sullivan County, N.Y.'s inhospitable soil. Vegetables would not grow there, but debts did, and the farmers were obliged to take in boarders. Soon the old houses became inns, sometimes with names that reflected a yearning for assimilation. The splendiferous Nevele is eleven spelled backward, in honor of a group of local visitors. Ratner's place had large Rs in the wrought-iron fencing. The owner called it the Raleigh...
