...make up about three-quarters of America's fuel were created in finite supply millions of years ago. At the rate they are being burned, they will begin playing out sometime around the year 2000, give or take a decade or so. The power sources of the future-solar, thermonuclear fusion, geothermal and coal-derived fuels-remain just that: visions for the future, with no certainty that such sources will be available when present reserves of oil and gas go into steep decline. And the use of coal and nuclear-fission power is not expanding nearly rapidly enough...

...campaign on any but a symbolic level--hence the long, analytical pieces on Miss Lillian's fish pond and brother Billy's proclivity for Budweiser. But Carter himself has a good flair for showmanship, and he exploited the public attention to imagery for all it was worthy--the solar heated (supposedly) inaugural podium is one example. Nor was Carter alone in his attention to symbols. Jerry Brown promised early in his campaign to remove, if elected, all of the presidential portraits in every federal office in Washington, a promise that undoubtedly would have cost more in labor than it would...

...might also effectively open up the rest of the solar system to manned spaceflights that cannot be considered now because of tremendous costs. J.P.L.'s Louis Friedman thinks that a flotilla of sunjammers could embark on a manned Mars mission by the end of the century, and foresees a day when fleets of huge kites shuttle through space-as the East Indiamen plied the oceans three centuries ago-making regular stops at Mercury, Venus, Mars or the asteroids...

...Another group at J.P.L. is working on the design of a spaceship that would be propelled by an ion engine; a small, continuous amount of thrust would be provided by the engine's ejecting ions produced when a beam of electrons (generated by electric current from solar cells) is sent through vaporized mercury. Such a low-thrust ion engine could, like the sunjammer's sail, maneuver a ship to a rendezvous with the comet. NASA is scheduled to decide next August which craft, if either, will make the mission. Until it decides, there will be fierce but friendly...

...were born in January or early February, you should count your astrological year as the year before you were born because the lunar calendar does not coincide exactly with the Western solar calendar. For example, if you were born in January, 1956, your sign is the ram, not the monkey...
