...play's action traces the descent into madness and furtive attempts at self defense of the title character, a soldier with an unfaithful wife and illegitimate child. Woyzeck is beaten up, experimented on and tortured until he snaps back, turning on the one thing he loves, his wife. His progression of distrust and anger leads him not only to doubt, but also to succumb slowly and miserably under a tide of filth and oppression...
...challenging, the ART's production evokes a vision of Woyzeck's town that is at some times starkly realistic and at others ephemeral or dreamlike. As the play draws to a climax, the dissonant sounds and effects only increase with the fervency of the mood. At one point, the soldier, his sanity deteriorating, marches off-stage to the musical theme of Twentieth Century Fox. Sadly, this exit seems altogether too appropriate for the tone of the performance...
...vivid manifestation of the military's greater problem: a seeming inability to police itself. In spite of leaders' repeated "zero tolerance" pronouncements--concerning political extremism, racism, sexual harassment and hazing--authorities are just as often forced to acknowledge a breakdown in the chain of command. Sasha, who joined the army because he "was stupid, liked guns, and needed money," is an experienced and somewhat psychotic soldier who shoots rounds in open fields and yells a lot. He is a story-teller, a liar and a lush, and his influence on Vania leads to drunken dances, exercise routines to "Let My People Go" and a rather vocal victory for Vania in the town's fixed wrestling match...
Perhaps more telling than anything he said was what Clinton did. He put Rahm Emanuel, who has moved into George Stephanopoulos' old office as senior political adviser, in charge of the reform campaign. Emanuel, a strategically rude, hyper sometime ballet dancer and former Israeli soldier who makes enemies first and friends later, is especially good at keeping Clinton in line. He spent much of the first four years pushing long-shot legislation to victory, including NAFTA and the crime bill; both were campaigns in which Clinton at various times turned squishy...
