TYRE, LEBANON: A suicide bomber blew himself up today near an Israeli army convoy in Southern Lebanon, killing one soldier and wounding seven. Hizballah has claimed responsibility for the attack in the village of Taibeh, 2 1/2 miles from the Lebanese-Israeli border. The attack is the latest incident in the decade-long struggle between the Iranian-backed Hizbollah and Israeli forces occupying Southern Lebanon. Despite two UN resolutions calling for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops, Israel has occupied the area since 1985 in an attempt to stop guerrilla raids on settlements in northern Israel. Adding to his tactical difficulties, Peres has a credibility problem. He has a reputation in Israel for being weak on security issues. In part, this is because he was never a combat soldier, unlike many other prominent Israeli political figures. His penchant for making dreamy, naive predictions about "the new Middle East" has also earned him suspicion. A spokesman for the NATO-led peace force said Spc. Shawn Austin is in stable condition. Austin was patrolling the base with one other soldier when they saw the intruder and opened fire. "He challenged the intruder, who in turn fired a shot, which hit the soldier in the left shoulder," Lt. Col. Chuck Merlo said. He did not know what kind of weapon the intruder was carrying...
...prescriptions. Heather (Claire Schwab '99) is a Polyanna in charge of these spoiled brats, even though her character is just as clueless as the rest. The only male patient is David (grad student Dan Fitzgerald), who does a convincing job at affecting the disturbed persona of a war-shattered soldier, even if his motivations are not always clear...
