...road. The confusion and the rocks in the road got to me. I stumbled, and fell hard against the mountainside. For a brief moment I thought it made more sense to curl up like an armadillo under the protection of my armor and wait it out. But the soldier behind me was screaming at me to run. I did. I don't really remember the next 75 meters; only throwing myself at the pile of soldiers huddled between the humvee and the mountainside. Mortars coming from the Korengal outpost lit up the sky in flashes. I could see a tangle...
This past Sunday, the media were allowed to cover the return of a fallen U.S. soldier for the first time in 18 years. The ban on coverage of such ceremonies, in place since it was imposed by the first Bush administration in 1991, was drafted under the pretenses of privacy and respect for the families of the dead. More recently though, the ban has been widely criticized as an attempt to mask the cost of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. On March 7, two British soldiers were killed in an ambush while accepting a pizza delivery at an army base near Belfast, an attack for which the dissident splinter group the Real IRA claimed responsibility. Just two days later, a policeman was murdered while sitting in his unmarked patrol car. A separate faction, Continuity IRA, said it had orchestrated the killing; two suspects have been arrested. Some...
...elder Tamang, who worked as a farmer before he became a soldier, doubts Nepal will ever achieve a total ban on Gurkha recruitment. If the recruitment is stopped, Nepal's flailing economy will take a hit; each year, the country receives $1.1 billion in remittances - nearly 18% of the national GDP - from the Gurkhas and other 2 million Nepalis serving abroad. Even with its new democratically elected government, there is no guarantee how long peace will last in a still fractious Nepalese society. "If Nepal was politically stable and there were enough jobs," says Saharman Tamang, "our young men would...
