Girlie Show -- at once a movie retrospective, a Ziegfeld revue, a living video and an R-rated takeoff on Cirque du Soleil -- opens with Smokey Robinson's Tears of a Clown and closes with Cole Porter's Be a Clown. Pierrot is your silent host; the calliope music announces that this is a three-ring circus of clowning around. And Madonna, once the Harlow harlot and now a perky harlequin...
...Bette's show follows the five-year run of Celine Dion's A New Day. That elephantine extravaganza, staged by ex-Cirque du Soleil director Franco Dragone, submerged the singer in gigantic sets and CGI effusions: rolling clouds, meteor showers, shooting stars. Midler jokes that she has come to "the only city that could teach Kraft about cheese" because of "the sh-tload of money they're payin' me." There's plenty of money lavished on the production too: $10 million (as she mentions three or four times during the evening), and it boasts some luscious videographic effects...

...stage lights went up, the audience encountered a large metal hoop suspended from the ceiling. This was the first and only prop of the evening. Dressed in a skintight black bodysuit, Rollins seamlessly moved through a series of contortions reminiscent of her performances with “Cirque du Soleil.” This included flipping in and out of the hoop, hanging by her feet, and spinning wildly with her legs extended.
