...Tengelmann is not shopping for cheap hamburger and canned corn to ship back to Germany. Erivan Haub, 46, the hereditary sole owner of the company, noted that he saw in A & P "an opening to the U.S. market where Tengelmann experience can be put to profitable use." Haub, who trained with the Chicago-based Jewel supermarket chain, promised to stay out of day-to-day operations and hinted, to the delight of A & P directors, that he might supply much needed capital. A full hands-off policy is neither likely nor desirable. Noted one U.S. food-chain executive in Hamburg...
Okay, so where does this leave undergraduate theater and Harvard undergraduates, the sole body of students whom Brustein is contractually required to serve? I don't know. I'm not convinced Brustein does either. In the past, he has thought about undergraduate drama, casually, as an appendix to the larger topic of theater and the university, but I don't think he ever realized he'd have anything to do with it, or had any desire to participate actively in its evolution. The demonstrators reduced the army PX, symbol of the military's privileged position, to a ruin, along with a local Pepsi-Cola bottling plant, delivery trucks, the Iran-American Society building and the home of the sole U.S. military adviser in the city. The adviser was not at home, but his Iranian guard was killed. The two days of rioting left 170 dead by the government's count, but more than 700 according to the opposition. "Mashhad used to be a very nice place," said...
...clumsy government attempts to lower food prices are not the sole reason for the shortages. When the Portuguese left en masse three years ago, they took with them, among other things, 28,000 of Angola's 30,000 trucks, thus crippling the food distribution system. Much of the richest agricultural land in Angola is under the sporadic control of UNITA, the South Africa-backed guerrilla force of Jonas Savimbi, who contested and lost control of the capital in 1976. Much of Angola's produce rots before it can reach Luanda...
...company for 21 years. Last week "Good Queen Bev," as Rudel has called her since her smashing performances in Donizetti's royal trilogy (Roberto Devereux, Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena), took on the biggest and riskiest role of her career. Next July she will become the company's sole director: Rudel has decided to devote all his energies to conducting...
